TRYOUT FORMAT: All athletes must tryout at in at least two events. Athletes will be evaluated based on their results, but great effort and attitude will also be taken into account.
Sprinters need to run 100m and the 400m. Distance runner the 400m and1600m. Throwers need to throw the shot put and do the standing long jump
Jumpers need to run the 100m and do the standing long jump
The more events you try out, the better the chance of making the team. TRYOUT SCHEDULE SUBJECT TO CHANGE.
MASK: FCPS requires student-athletes to wear face masks during competitions and practices. This action was made as a result of an increase in COVID-19 cases statewide and new mandates from the Governor. If wearing a mask makes participation in sports difficult, it is advisable not to participate in sports at this time.
EXPECTATIONS: This is a VARSITY SPORT and attendance at practices and meets are MANDATORY. We understand you are busy with other activities and request that you carefully consider your time commitments before trying out for track and field. It’s the responsibility of the student-athlete to inform Coach Zuber of any conflicts. All conflicts need to be addressed at the beginning of the season. The official schedule is posted on our team website www.wtwoodsonsports.com.
CHECK-IN BEFORE PRACTICE: Complete the FCPS Pre-Activity Screening Form NO EARLIER than 2 hours PRIOR. Stay in your car until you have your temperature taken and have completed the screening process.
PRACTICE:Due to Covid-19 imposed restrictions, practice times will be determined after tryouts.
MEETS:Due to Covid-19 imposed restrictions, there will be no sanctioned Invitationals. The plan is to conduct a series of six dual or triangular meets outdoors at Patriot District schools culminating in a District Championship, followed by a Region Championship (also outdoors) and finally a State Championship conducted indoors in Virginia Beach. There will be no automatic qualifying marks for District, Region, or State this season.
PARENT HELPERS: Without Invitationals, we need parent-volunteers to help us run these six regular season meets. More information will come at a later time, but it’s crucial that we have volunteers to make this irregular season happen.
EVENTS: These events are offered in a regular indoor track & field meet: Running events: 55m Hurdles, 55m Dash, 1600m Run, 300m Dash, 500m Run, 1000m Dash, 3200m Run Field events: Long jump, Triple jump, High jump, Pole vault, Shot Put
COSTS: New athletes must purchase a uniform if they have never participated in Woodson cross country, indoor, or outdoor track & field.
SHOES: Make sure you have running specific shoes; lower body injuries are often caused by wearing the wrong type of shoes. The PR Running Store offers excellent discount to high school athletes at all of their locations. Make sure you tell them you’re from Woodson HS; 15% off year-round and the store give $5 back to our team with any shoe/spike
